EHF President: “Will be an exciting sporting event”

Dear beach handball friends!

From the 24 -27 October 2019, the European Handball Federation, together with the Italian Handball Federation (FIGH), will return to Sicily, a jewel in the Mediterranean Sea for the 2019 EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup. The ongoing success of the competition continues to exceed the expectations of the organisers, teams, and spectators alike; since the very first beach handball event in 2000, Italy continues to embrace the sport, and as the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup returns to the City of Catania for the second time, I cordially welcome you once again to the island.

On this occasion, the 6th edition of the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup welcomes again 32 (16 women’s and 16 men’s) participating teams. In the women’s competition, we see the return of the Hungarian team of Multichem-Szentendrei N.K.E. in its fifth consecutive participation at this event. In 2017, the team won the silver medal; last year – in spectacular fashion – Multichem-Szentendrei N.K.E. took the gold medal. As they return to Catania, the team could face its 2018 final opponent GRD LECA – (POR) or other top clubs such as C.BM Playa Algeciras (ESP) and Aker Topphandball (NOR).

In the men’s competition, Dentono Zagreb continue to be the ‘heavyweights’ on the beach handball circuit, and the team returns as the defending champion for its 6th successive event; the team took the silver medal at the very first event in 2014. Detono Zagreb won the gold medal after defeating “Ekaterinodar” Krasnodar (RUS), another beach handball success story, in 2018. With the primary objective of retaining the 2018 title, the team from the heart of Croatia anticipate meeting its challengers at the “Domusbet Arena Beach Stadium” in Catania.

On behalf of the European Handball Federation, and in my function as EHF President, I extend my thanks to the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Handball (FIGH), as well as all the staff members and volunteers who have worked with complete engagement to present and host the 6th EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup. Once again, I heartily welcome you to Catania, Sicily. I wish the teams the very best of luck in their endeavours to become a medallist at the EHF Beach Handball Champions Cup.

So, in the spirit of fair play, enjoy the matches and may the best teams win!

Sporting wishes,
Michael Wiederer
EHF President
